Busy Day!

After leaving the Sacred Grove, we headed into downtown Palmyra to the Grandin Press.

It was fascinating to learn about the first printing of the Book of Mormon.

From there we went to the Whitmer Farm.

This is where much of the translation of the Book of Mormon took place and where the church was organized.  To think we were able to stand in the same room as these original saints did was humbling.

From there we headed back to Canada and a much easier border crossing!

Jennifer’s mission boundaries extended to the area known as Thousand Islands.  We decided to see the area by boat.  We boarded in the town of Gananoque (Gan a knock way).

The boat ride took us along the Saint Lawrence Seaway.  One side was the US and one side was Canada.

We saw the world’s shortest international bridge.

The houses (mostly summer homes) were amazing.

The contrast really struck me between the humble beginnings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Whitmer farm house and the excessiveness of the opulent homes where perhaps nothing quite so significant took place.

Palmyra

After we left Niagara Falls, we crossed over the border back into the US.  It was easily the longest wait we had the entire trip.  It is MUCH harder to get into the United States than it is to leave.
We headed to Palmyra, New York.  We checked into our hotel and headed off to see some sights.
We headed up to the monument at Hill Cumorah.

From there, we went to the Joseph Smith family farm and toured it.  (We decided to wait until the next day to go to the Sacred Grove.)

We didn’t think we’d see anyone we knew, but we were wrong . .
We noticed a couple that used to live in our ward a whole bunch of years ago.

There were members of the cast greeting the crowd.  The couple that came down our row chatted with us.  They asked us about our trip and we told them that we were taking our daughter back to see her mission.  They told us they had just done the same with their son.  When we asked which mission, they told us it was the same as David’s!  It turned out that their son was David’s trainer and he was there (playing the part of battle Laman.)
